Ah… I’m not sure if I could give any easier solution to this myself! If ever faced with art block, there are times when I look for new things to draw and times where I go back to my usual drawing subject(s) (friends, favorite characters, etc.).
Other times, I’ll simply attempt the impossible and just go easy on drawing. (*gasp*)! I usually fail and find myself trying to pick up a pencil again after a day, but taking that small time away from trying to make something and simply thinking about drawing can help a bunch.
Aside from that though… my apologies that I must say that the best way to get out of it is to draw constantly. Every doodle you make is improvement somewhere, even if it seems like it’s not. Every artist has that period when they feel like they’re in a rut and can’t draw anything for days, maybe even weeks, at a time. I’d imagine a few months isn’t too unnatural as well.
I’ve had my few occurrences where I felt like a lot of what I drew was poop. I would mull over any past pieces I made that I felt were the best I’d ever be capable of doing and get a bit frustrated I couldn’t do that on a whim at a that given time. But, rather than get SO overly frustrated and quit drawing, I kept at it.
Getting other opinions on my art from friends, family, and folks also influenced me to keep going with it, even if I wasn’t overly satisfied. Finally, however, I noticed my artwork was starting to change for the better. I still kept going with it, and I gradually got out of that rut.
One may find this hard to believe, but that was actually fairly recently I kind of felt like this; the later half of 2013 to be exact. There was something about my art that I just felt so… ‘ugh’ about, I couldn’t understand it. I had the drive to do it, but I wasn’t sure if my results showed it. As time kept going, though, and people actually told me they liked my stuff, I kept at it with my head held high. And, in these past few months (around the beginning of… May-ish or so) is when I really felt out of my art block. It’s also when I actually felt proud of more of my art pieces.
Trust me, I know hearing the usual ‘keep drawing’ from any artist get’s old and frustrating really fast. Heck, maybe my attempt to tell you this pushed that frustration over the boiling point. But, it DOES help you get out of art block in time. Drawing can be a challenging thing to do. One can only perfect it with patience… and of course, practice!
I hope you get out it it soon! <3
