where I dump my scribbles
Hi orlando! My cousin keeps drawing in your style and she claims it is hers without giving any credit. I try to tell her to give credit but she won't and I don't really know what to do.

(Aah, sorry if any of this is typed out like garbage, on my phone right now! Will fix in a bit when I’m on my laptop.)

Heya!

Agh… honestly, I wouldn’t know what to do either.

If it’s really the case where your cousin has actually seen my art and they really are trying to draw in my style and say it’s theirs, that’s pretty rude and disrespectful. At least in my opinion. And that’s not just to the artist or action itself, but anyone you may show it to, as you’re giving them false impression of you coming up with a certain style that you yourself made up.

And, I know that there are folks that have very different opinions on this. Particularly an opinion that one single person can’t truly ‘own’/claim a style theirs. And to -some- extent, I agree with that. People can emulate, heavily reference, etc. I mean, there can always be that case scenario where someone may say that your art reminds them of *so and so*. Not saying that you were inspired by *so and so* (heck, you may be entirely unfamiliar with them), nor that they are familiar with you. But the possibility of coming across someone that seems to have a very similar foundation of art with you is fairly likely.

To be honest, my style was pretty much derived from a lot of inspiration with Looney Tunes, Disney, a few other cartoons, and a few other individual artists. At least, while I kept drawing, I would watch/often study pieces from said sources. And I’m usually one to mention these overall inspirations when asked. I do find it only proper to give credit to them and a ‘thank you’ for actually helping me through my learning process.

However, at the same time, I am a high believer that folks do truly have -their- own style. Even if it’s a variant on one that someone is really known for (Chuck Jones, Walt Disney, Don Bluth, etc.), each individual person can shine their own unique light in their artwork. As long as it’s not traced, or traced and simply added onto/edited over, I find it to be fairly legit.

I.. again, in the case that your cousin has actually seen my work but is trying to claim it theirs, I really would appreciate credit for at least being an inspiration for it. Not to sound all ‘high and mighty about it’ (as I really don’t like to do that)’, but if I wasn’t here or even chose not to post my work here or online in general, I don’t think they would really have -my- style to try and draw/claim theirs. Just saying. <:)

But as long it technically not traced in any way there, there’s really nothing i can do about either. Just try ask for credit for it. And even if hearing it from me they still deny it then… *shrugs* Oh well. Appreciate you wanting to tell me this, though, thank you. <3

Isn’t going discourage keep at my art, especially at this point! <3
